Softbank Group said it soon will begin offering a new asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) data transfer service with a downstream speed of 40Mbps. ... The services both have a transfer rate of 3Mbps in the upstream direction, which they claimed is Japan's first.

Softbank has set the monthly fee at 3,970 yen (US$ 36.50)

...yes, but I've got 100Mbps fiber optic to my home, and that only costs me about $40 US per month. I think that as the consumers here start to look for speed they'll empower a lot of the established, but smaller fiber optic vendors.

I wonder if SoftBank is feeling the pressure from these upstarts. I know that their salespeople on the streets look quite downhearted when I mention the magical words 'fiber optic'. ;)
