I am doing some research at the moment into which search engings and directories are worth submitting to for Australian traffic.

In the past I have done as standard;
Inktomi
Yahoo AU
Google
Altavista AU
DMOZ
Looksmart
Web Wombat.

Looksmart and Google I see as essential but U am starting to wonder about the others; any advice/thoughts would be great.

Cheers

ninemsn's primary results are provided by Looksmart AU and their secodary results are provided by Inktomi so thets pretty much covered.

well i think you got it all pretty much covered then, im not sure whether its worth submitting to zeal, but it depends if your site is commercial or not.

I think you got most of it covered with yahoo and google.

If you are specifically targeting Aus then a couple of things to consider are your domain and DMOZ category.

1) Some of the Engines you mentioned above, AV, G and Wombat, give preference to a .AU domain.

2) Google also uses the DMOZ category as an indicator to include non .au material in the Aus Google. Therefor, try to get a Regional listing in the Australia section as this will affect Google.au and subsequently Y!.au.

Otherwise, apart from smaller/niche directories, I think you have it covered.

There are numerous other Aussie directories, mainly for business sites. What kind of site is the one in question?

Google also uses the DMOZ category as an indicator to include non .au material in the Aus Google.

Other members of WW have stated that although listed in a local category of DMOZ, their site was not recognized to be in that country. I'm afraid that will also be true for Australia. AFAIK only the ccTLD (Country Code Top Level Domain; in this case '.au') or the IP address of the server will help for a search on Google restricted to pages in a certain country. OTOH, it is certainly a good idea to go for a local category in DMOZ, if not for Google at this moment, it can help for other search engines.

How does Google work out where the site is hosted? [webmasterworld.com]
Forget ccTLDs - it's local hosting time [webmasterworld.com]

Hi

The Aussie market seems very limiting is this the case?

Can someone please let me know all the Aussie and Kiwi directories (not search engines) big or small.

I am responsible for some e-commerce sites in the UK and would like to push our sites in Oz and NZ.

Many thanks.

cple of kiwi sites for u:

ispy.co.nz (ppc)
searchnz.co.nz
nzsearch.co.nz
thewebdirectory.co.nz
weblinks.newzealand.co.nz
qa.co.nz
nzsites.co.nz
nzexplorer.co.nz
accessnz.co.nz

these are all very small though: the pick would be the top 2. otherwise use looksmart.co.nz to get into msn in NZ, and stick with google. lycos and altavista probably have about 5% of the market between them here.

cheers

lloyd,

There are many specialist directories for specific categories that can usually be found by checking the backlinks of high-ranking competitors.

The following page has a handy list of some of them:

I run a small directory (http://www.dajuroka.com) in Australia but at this stage it is not focussed on Australia. That may change. Mind you the whole thing might die if I don't get some sleep and sought out my classification system! My mother never told me there would be things (internet) like this. If you really start to think about how big it really is and how quickly more URLs are appearing it is really beyond awesome. To think I thought I could make a dint!.
I wonder what the next thing will be after Google and Yahoo (and the ODP) give up trying. Maybe the semantic web and we all code ourselves into a directory. Maybe a new sort of DNS server.
