I thought people might be interested to know some basic stats on video format preferences we are seeing from Japanese readers.

Preferred Video Format WMV or Quicktime
Major supprise; WMV is around 10 times more popular than Quicktime. I thought WMV could be more popular, but the ratio means that it is almost not worth us catering for Quicktime. Remember these are broadband video files around 80MB of server space each.

1+Mbps or 56K
The broadband files are around 3.5 times more popular.

We are now serving 1GB per day of video and we still have more videos to add to the site.

Over in the Broadband customers in Japan 10 or 20 Million? thread [webmasterworld.com] I mentioned that I saw more WMV and QT than other formats. I asked one of the IT geeks in a company I work for with over 3000 PCs about what format was preferred and he said that everybody has WMV installed by default, but between 5-10% will install QT of their own initiative. They don't prefer one format over the other, it's just that WMV is already there in all Windows machines. QT requires action on the user's part.
