I am looking for a global meta engine, with a very high proportion of Australian searchers. Or does anyone have a better idea to reach this target market?

www.google.com.au :) not meta, but your best option. You need to have an "au" domain or you may have trouble. No problems using Adwords though.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld Wired_Suzanne.

Most Aussie users I know use MSN or Yahoo; MSN because that is what is installed through their ISP package, or Yahoo because, well, everyone Yahoo's don't they.

Those with some savvy will use Google and thus be recirected to Google.com.au (Grrr) so that will start to gain a little in time. Some have also reported a modicum of success with Looksmart.com.au although I do not play that game myself.

As far as I know, there is no dedicated Aussie Meta Engine, although I am not sure we need one. Still, if anyone out there is in the programming mood ...

www.anzwers.com.au uses Google results.

Really? Why is there a Yahoo! logo on their site?

Well it's Yahoo/Google which means that it is basically cleaned up Google results, e.g. no more than two results from the same domain next to each other.

Ah! Cool. I am getting off-topic but is it really owned by OzeMail?

Yes ANZWERS.com.au is pwned by Ozemail. It originally started up using Inktomi as the database source and achieved various degrees of success as an independant entity with it's own staff and management team.

Some 12-18 months ago the management was taken over by Yahoo Australia with search results from Google with a .au bias. The Diretory links feed straight to Yahoo.com.au.

I always held hope for ANZWERS but these days I just wonder what sort of traffic and usage it gets.

Are you trying to get international users to access Australian Content/Results?

I'd say that GoEureka would get some residual international traffic off the Telstra branding and they could serve directed results off the Google.au engine.

Depending on the niche you are after, maybe you can look at sites such as Sydney.com.au that would probably be getting a lot of international touristy visits. They use the Web Wombat Search Engine with some stickiness to Sydney sites... Hmmmm.
