You can search using Japanese on www.google.com and you receive different results to www.google.co.jp, BUT I cannot set up PPC ads in Japanese on either site.

Anyone got any ideas?

Also you might want to take a look at the box on the right-hand side of
[adwords.google.com...]

Looks like you can select Japanese there too.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for finding this.

I only looked about two weeks ago and it was there.

It is great news!

Other than the upcoming Overture Japan PPC, Adwords Select is the only Japanese PPC going.

And the Subsite Listings offered by BTLooksmart, yes? They go out to MSN, DION, Biglobe, ODN and I think Excite.

Subsite Listings offered by BTLooksmart

When did they start those? It certainly takes a bit of digging on their site just to find them. I guess you can tell I'm not a huge LookSmart customer ;)

I think they started in April or so. I just finished a 1 month campaign with them and am currently going over the results with the client. My initial feeling is that it was worth the time and money, but I've not yet quantified this so I can't say for sure.

For me it seems like PPC campaigns have value when any of these criteria are met:

1. the product/service offered has a high margin
2. the lifetime value of a customer is high
3. the conversion rate is high
4. the client wants traffic right away

Any other angles?

I think that high margin or long life customers may be worth it at 50 yen, but the market should work the price up to that point.

Most of our clients would not pay 50 yen and we will not pay it as an on going form of advertising. I think they should have started the bidding at 12 or 15 yen and then let the market drive the price up from there. This is particularly important as PPC is new (well relatively) to the Japanese market and they need to encourage customers to use it.

Yes, I know it is hard to set up all the systems for the Japanese market, but if you price yourself out of the market your investment will be a waste.

So is it true that Google AdWords is the only Japanese PPC right now?

Not exactly. BTLooksmart Subsite Listings (Japanese PPC) started some time around April 2002, I believe.

Hey daikon wanna fill us in on the Subsite Listing [btlooksmart.com] nitty gritty? That link above is just about the only info I could find about this program on the LookSmart site and the information is pretty sparse there. It looks a lot like Google's AdWords to me, but where are the details?!

Can you choose which keywords you're targeting? What's the base price? How's the traffic? I'm sure others would be interested in hearing about your experiences as well.

Is this program considered experimental? I ask that because I really don't see any big announcements or press releases about this, nor do I see a lot of information on their site.
