I have been asked to promote my company’s website in China and South East Asia. The website has a .com domain address. The counties I have been asked to concentrate on are China, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea and Indonesia. Does anybody out there know the main search engines used in these counties? What languages they are in? Will I need to translate my site into different languages? Or should I consider using translated doorway pages?
Unfortunately I have not been able to find the sort of stats I’m looking for from media metrix or Nielsen. Ideally I am looking for the top 10 search engines used in these countries, to identify weather they use their own specific naive language or the major .com (English).
Do you think I should employ a third party company to handle the submissions? If so does anyone know of any promotion companies?
Please any advice is greatly appreciated
Many thanks
Clare

get them translated professionally...get them checked independently by a native speaker of the language
you'll find search engine information here at webmasterworld...use something like [worldlanguage.com...] to translate the SE add URL pages and it will be possible to submit to at least some of them...I can't understand a word of Chinese and yet Sohu is one of our biggest referrers...so submission can be done in house.
check some of the older discussions in here...there is a wealth of information country by country.
I've only targeted China and Japan so far, but there is good info on some of the others...find the main discussion labelled with just the country name.

I merged your two threads as the questions were very related.
You might want to start with the Asia-Pacific Overview [webmasterworld.com] and work your way through from there. We have some members spread around the area so the information is pretty well spot on.
You might also want to have a look at a thread on Payed Inclusion and Pay Per Click in Asia Pacific [webmasterworld.com] for some information on how the region is headed.
"Official" top 10 info is not that easy for the Asia Pacific region. The only "Top 10" thread we have is on Australia [webmasterworld.com], but there is tons of information on the other main countries.
As to Languages, we have some very interesting discussions on Foriegn Text [webmasterworld.com] and the mechanincs of translating into Chinese [webmasterworld.com].
We have a general "Language" thread about Penetrating Asia [webmasterworld.com], and one about the English Language in Aisa [webmasterworld.com]. Also some discussions about Designing for Asia [webmasterworld.com].
You have a lot to read, enjoy the Journey.

sohu.com
whilst in South East Asia in Malaysia and the neighbouring countries
catcha.com.my
Personally I dislike them though, the relevency from searches are no where near the ones of any major search engines.
The most important searchengines in China
-----------------------------------------
1 - google.com
2 - baidu.com
* all 4 protals have their own Directory. Bboth sina.com.cn and sohu.com supply PFI(RMB300/year/list) and PFP(RMB2500/year/list) for their Directory
* baidu.com supply PPC service. RMB0.10/click - except for cnyahoo & 163 - almost all the chinese portals or search engines are powered by baidu. baidu PPC is displayed in 163.com also

Just for your information on the Japan side, we had a thread entitled How to enter in the Japanese market [webmasterworld.com] that answers some of your questions curly_clare.
