Business License for Web Hosting/Design

Classification (Florida)...what's your experience?

When I got my business license in a small Florida town, they issued it for 'manufacturing' because I would be creating websites. Seems extremely inappropriate to me, but no matter what I said, they just said I'm "manufacturing" websites by offering hosting and design services.

I've yet to follow through with my business plans due to health issues involving my parents taking up a large amount of time, but I need to do something soon since my day job is looking less secure due to further downsizing. Meanwhile, I received a "Tangible Personal Property Tax Return" from the county, part of which requires me to include mobile home attachments (utility bldg., etc.)... and I don't understand why that would be required for what I intend to do. All business would be conducted over the internet.

Before I return to the tax collector's office, I'd like some input from those of you who have business licenses issued for web hosting and/or web design services. What classification was your business license in? Did you have to deal with tangible personal property tax?

Would appreciate hearing other experiences with regards to business licenses.

Thanks!
Kathy

Maybe tell them you're designing Web sites. Also, you may want to check what type of license consultants, writers, graphic artist, or other creative proffesional have since those would be the clostest fields.

Regarding taxes, speak to an accountant. But you won't owe any property tax if your business doesn't own any property. After all, 0 x 100% = 0, and I'm sure the taxes are at least a little less than 100% (though sometimes I wonder). An accountant could probibly also help you with your license isssue.

In most states you can also apply for a business liscense from the state. Find your state gov's business site and look through some of the documents to find related businesses and articles that supports your field.

The tax/no tax of companies who do business online can be applied to several areas outside of just selling items in some states.

One thing to consider is that it might be better for the business to own the property than for you personally. An accountant would be valuable here, but you coulld probably find a lot of info yourself.

For tax advantages, it might be better to rent it from yourslef though. I'm not sure, depends on the laws in your state, and the various tax levels.

Thanks, everyone.

This is pretty much something I'll be doing on the side to bring in some much-needed extra income... so, trying to keep expenses low. First thing to do is to straighten out the manufacturing classification with the county, and go from there.

Kind regards,
Kathy
