When "site:" returns a small number of results, is there a problem?

I am trying to determine what is causing my site to rank poorly. I believe that I have implemented all of the necessary SEO elements. In any case, I performed the "site:" command and it reported back with this: "Results 1 - 7 of about 2,670 from...". And, at the bottom of the page it says "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 7 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included."

I was wondering if that is indicative of a problem. Should I be concerned about this? Is this a bad thing? Is this why the site doesn't rank well? Is google basically telling me that out of my 2000+ pages, google is only acknowledging 7 my pages. What would possible cause it to do this?

Also, when I perform the "site:" command on my competitor's url, google shows every single one of their pages.

Yes. It is saying that the rest of the pages are too similar.

Make sure that every page has a unique title and description.

Make sure that each page of content has only one URL that can reach it.

Just noted the same for another site that's heavily into exchanged links, got me wondering if this was the first sign of imminent page loss, think I'll keep an eye on it...
