My example (I hope I can make it clear):
I have a picture on number 1 position with a very common term on google images. When you click the picture, normally the exact page where the picture was found should appear in the bottom section of the new window. What happens is: it doesnt show that exact page but my index page instead. The reason: The "Hyphen" or "-" in the name of that "underpage" has been left out when being processed by google which can be seen as the link shown by google in the upper part is wrong (lacking the hyphens). Therefor the search has acutally turned up with an error.
Sorry, if this is nonsense or irrelevant for you more experienced guys, but to my little brain this seems to be an extension of your discussed problem with the "Hyphen" that might reach far into all sites with "hyphened-pages-on-the-web".
