Google dropped PART of a site - how to troubleshoot?

Googlebot avoids it, too

Hello everyone.

I have this site where Google had dropped (at once) all the pages from a large section of a site. The section happens to be a forum. All URLs dropped start with /forums/ One day all the PR (index had PR4 at the time, other pages 1 to 3), all the cache as well as all the links to anything that's in this section are gone.

Since then Googlebot had never gotten back to the section. I do see couple requests a day to pages in the section but it is hard to tell if it is even Google themselves and not someone forging the referrer data. The section pages have AdSense and Mediabot is there every day, getting hundreds of pages. Still nothing makes it back into Google index.

Does anyone have any idea about how to go about finding out what happened? Could it be some sort of a penalty? Could someone hijack a section of a site? How would you find out?

Any pointers or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Stefan

I'll mostly just bump this up.

Have you read any of the threads on the new G infrastructure called BigDaddy? People with forums have reported losing many pages during the course of it.

Thank you for your suggestions, gentlemen.
Yes I did see those posts and plenty similar ones and I did hear about BD update (which is supposed to be over, right?)

Anyways, my problem is not that I lost a lot of pages. The problem is that I lost ALL the pages in this section. They are not in supplementals, either. All the pages of the section that used to have PR don't have it anymore. The cache's gone, too.

I guess I cannot even file the reinclusion because the rest of the site is doing OK. Much worse than before BD update but it's at least still there.

Looking for ideas here.
