Old urls being ranked prominently in Google search

Confused about Google Search Engine

Hi,

First post and first hand experience with Google!

I recently re-designed a corporate website. The main folder of the website 'conferences' was being googled earlier. However, due to the requirements, the content of 'conferences' folder has been moved to new folder.

But if someone googles anything related to conferences folder, it is being shown on first page (but with old links, which either no longer exist or are not required).

What should I do?

Thanks

Hello, and welcome to the forums,

If the pages are the same but just in a new folder, then place a 301 redirect for the old url. Otherwise make sure the old urls return a 404 or 410 header and then wait. It will take time for the Google index to sort it out.
