New page has initial SERP ranking and then is dropped.

Has the way I created links to this page caused my problem?

I recently posted a single new page on my website (a one page topic). The primary keyword for the new page is not a money keyword nor one you would expect much competition for.

Initially I posted the page and just put one link directed to it from my home page.

It got a Google SERP rank of 31. (So much for my SEO skills.)

Typically on my site every page has an index that links to the first page of all other subtopics.

I updated the every-page index on about 30 website pages (maybe 3 days after initially posting the page). The SERP rank for the new page climbed to 26.

A few days later I finished updating the every-page indexes so all totaled about 150 site pages link to this new page.

Now my SERP rank for the new page has fallen out of the top 100 (I have no idea where it ranks, if at all).

What have I done wrong? The linking to this page is the same as with all other first pages of each of my topics and they have good SERP rankings.

I guess the solution is to rename the page and start from square one again?
