I just did a sport related search in Google.co.uk, filtered the results to display UK site only, but the number one spot is taken by a US AUTHORITY website (.com), at number 2 is the UK authority website. I checked the IP location and it's definitly hosted in the US.

A fluke, or Google 'unfiltering' AUTHORITY websites?

I noticed the same thing for Canada today.

My suspicion is its just another temporary BD scru-up but who knows? Maybe Google has decided to make the corporate giants even happier (and why not? - now Google has joined the club, its finding new friends . . . kinda like people who suddenly get rich and become conservatives :)
