The same thing always happens to me. I don't know the reason. Maybe someone would like to take a stab at it?

When a site experiences the "sandbox effect" this often comes after a short period of ranking and traffic being sent. Then it just dries up. This sounds like your site might be right on the edge of whatever trips one of the filter elements people have called the sandbox, boucing sometimes over the line and then sometimes back.

How long has this been going on? In recent weeks, Google has been rolling out the Big Daddy infrastructure and in some areas the search results have been quite unstable, bouncing first to this data canter and then another. If your site is radically different in the old and new data sets, this alone could have caused the hiccups over the past, say 4 to 6 weeks.

But if it's been going on longer than that, then something else is going on.

This has happened to most of my sites over the course of a year and a half. It happens to each site at different times...

happens to one of my sites, but in about 2-3 month intervals, meaning that it does great for about 3 months, and bad for three. It's weird because I change nothing.

Does anyone escape this "sandbox" which you believe is tripped by the filter elements - I mean, if everything is done perfectly?

The pattern you describe is something I've consistantly/often seen. Booming for an initial 10 weeks or so - then completely suppressed.
