Where does google pull the site descriptions from?

I have been going over some of my competitors' sites, and for the life of me I cant find the text that is showing up in the SERPS.

Would it not be logical to think that this text should be on the index page?

Any ideas where Google draws these descriptions from? From what I see its not the index page.

When it's not from the visible page or the meta description, it comes from the DMOZ description.

Mine is from the Meta description.

I believe that if the search term appears in the meta description then it will show a snippet from that including the term, if not then if the term appears in the visible text it will show a snippet from that including the term. If neither then DMOZ description.

and i always thought its otherway round that if its not from DMOZ then its from Meta.

I always thought, 1. page > 2. meta-description >
3. dmoz , as I thought those days the meta descriptions were not as important as the page's text.
