For example, I wrote a while back a tutorial on a specific topic. For as long as I can remember I was fluxuating between #3 and #4 on google. Recently, when I type in a search for that topic, my tutorial can't be found at least for the first 15 pages (didnt check more than that). Its as if it dropped off the index.
I decided to do some more testing. I did a search for "How to use (my topic)". Tons of pages come up that reference my tutorial, including a ton of spammy doorway pages, but my tutorial is not seen until the 5 or 6th page, and its showing the ip address in the url for some reason.
I have also noticed that my pages dropped from 100k pages indexed, to a measly 9k? Am i being penalized?
Last but not least, i have noticed that I am still getting a lot of referrers from google, yet when i check those referrers I am nowhere to be found. I have tried this from multiple locations, so dont think its geographic.
Over time I have changed my linking scheme due to seo, changing directory, etc. Could that have left all these different urls in google's index that it sees as duplicate content, even though on my site I am only pointing to the content with one link?
Anyone have any advice as to what I can do? Is it worth contacting google about this and seeing if there is a penalty on my domain?
