Today the site finally seems to have come out. This has happened pretty much without my help because I have done very little to trigger its release. It now has respectable rankings for several terms. The site is about 15 months old. I thought I would point this out because to me it seems like more evidence in favour of a sandbox filter.

Since there were no canon issues with this particular site, and no optimization was done within the last 6 months, I would suggest this might be the site being released from being filtered or dampened (what most call the sandbox)
I have another sites right behind this one in terms of creation date and domain registration date. I am anxious to see whether the same happens with this one.
How much as the traffic increased on your recently de-sanded sites?
Not a lot I must confess but this is a niche and it only happeed today.

My traffic from Google has increased about 10 times in the last two weeks. Keep in mind I have very little, and at times no Google traffic before that, except for very obscure related keywords.
That was one heck of a wait.
I started up a new(then) website in September 2004 in an ultra ultra competitive field - still in sandbox in G - no referrals at all. I do get referrals from Yahoo, Ask, MSN, and from links that I've attained so the site does make some money - I gave up thinking about G a long time ago for this site and decided to plod on with the traffic I'm getting - build the site up and keep it updated. Its good to see that someone else has popped out after a similar length of time.
It is tempting to conclude that the site has 'come out of the sandbox' and everything will be fine for ever more, but if you get too elated about it you might get a sick feeling in your stomach if a few days or weeks later the site drops back to where it was or even lower.
There have been a number of times when traffic levels from google to some of my sites peak for a short time, only to fall back down later.

Great to hear that. I can't wait for my 14-months old site to do the same. I hoped it will go out when it is one year old but so far it's still sandboxed, while its other language version with the same age has been released after exactly 3 months and since then is always in top 5 for its main phrases (about 5 million results).

Did your site emerge suddenly, or did you have signs for a while that it was coming out of the sandbox? I have a site that is a year old, and since Jaggar, it has been inching upwards on the bigdaddy datacenter and slowly spreading. Been a slow process for several months now, gradually getting more traffic each week (now up to about 15 visitors a day from Google).

Four months to 14 months for me.
BTW, the good question is: IS there a way to bypass the sandbox ..I guess.
It's my personal experience so far that it's difficult to bypass the filtering stage especially in new sites.
The longer the domain exists and remains indexed in google, it seems the less likely changes made (new links, new pages) make an impact on rankings.

The number of 'acquired' new inbounds to about 1-3 per day.
The number of 'keyword laden' anchors linking home.
The number of links purchased or rented from higher pr sites(6,7,8)
Often it makes more sense to me make a subpage or subcategory that uses the keyword and point the link there if its rented or purchased. This can be debated for sure.
Make sure you use all variations of the keyword to link to the index. Ideally, you would use a totally different variation for every new link that is incoming, but that is not always feasible.
Must admit i was expecting 9-12mths in the sand ie 3 to 4 updates on the last few sites i have been working on, looks like the release time is getting worse!
So it looks like four of my sites currently in the sand wont see daylight until sometime 2007 - Great, just great!

Crobb305 My site received no Google traffic that I was aware of until a month or two ago when it started to get the occasional hit for one particular three word phrase. During this same period it also started to get found for a few image searches before being released on Friday.
Other language version was released after 3 months and is in top 5 SERPs constantly for a year against about 4 million results.
I added Adsense to both language versions of the site about a week ago. But Google claims that Adsense has nothing to site ranking, so assume that leaving the sandbox at the same time is just a coincidence :)
Or perhaps not - I cleaned the site up to perfectly comply with webmaster guidelines before applying to Adsense - however there was no black hat there before anyway.
Climbing from #250 to top 10 obviously isn't easy, but I did it before, and it's much easier than climbing from nowhere :)

The idea of a "release time" is one of the reasons why the name Sandbox is not accurate. As Matt Cutts has said many times, this is a combination of algo factors that gives an effect that can look like a sandbox. But there is definitely no such thing as a release time, or any kind of set "delay" period on new sites.
When a domain begins to display in the search results is very specific to when that domain shows Google enough positive signs -- and that can be weeks, a couple of months, or more than a year. I've seen all the extremes.
