How important are English language local search versions?

To rank well for country specific searches in google.ca or .co.uk it's seems necessary to host in that respective country or to have their respective tld.

Does anyone have any figures on what proportion of people who use google.ca, or .uk actually search 'pages from Canada / UK only'? Then of course if anyone has figures for the volume of searches carried out through these local versions of Google that would help too.

For me I'm primarily interested in the UK, figures for any English speaking country would help when I'm starting with nothing.
