Google and subdomains

Is old advice still sound?

I've read this 3+ year old thread about using subdomains and how they can affect ranking in Google:

[webmasterworld.com...]

Is it still ok to use subdomains providing the content is completely unique throughout? And what about cross-linking effects?

I'm about to start some work for an organisation which requires 2 sites. The options we're looking at are:

1. One "parent" site and one "child" site, which is like a project of this organisation, with two completely separate domain names.
2. Use one domain for the parent site and use a subdomain for the child. Point our intended domain name for the child site to this subdomain.

G rankings will be important so I don't want to screw this up! The parent site does actually exist already, but the hosting provider will probably be changed if we decide to go with option 2 above. We also need to link from the child to the parent on every page of the child site.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks in advance

I have a site with the main domain and 3 subdomains and do just fine in Google. I also crosslink between them and have had no problems in the 2+ years that the site has existed in its current format.

That's a good logical criteria for using a subdomain. Presuming thought that those link-backs are topically related.

I have a site with one main and two subdomains. It has done very well in the rankings for 3+ years now. I link between the domains, but not excessively. All interlinking is on-topic, which is one reason why my domain and subs rank well.
