301 Redirects and Pagerank

When replacing an old page and using a 301 redirect to the replacement, my understanding that page rank is kept. However, does the page rank of the new page show immediately or only once the toolbar is updated?

Cheers.

Is PR kept?

I've just put in a new 301 to a page that had PR. As things stand, to Google Toolbar seems to indicate that none of the pages have their previous PR (with all showing 0pr).

I was expecting Google to simply treat the site as new, but was hoping to see a fair amount of PR regained at the next update as their spiders followed existing backlinks (though I was unsure as to how they would treat backlinks to the old url and assumed good practice would be to try to change as many of these to the new url to prevent confusion).

It takes several months for the PR to appear on the toolbar.

Google proboably assigns a PR that they use internally within just a few days.
