No, it's not required to be indexed or ranked well.

But more and more user-friendliness is getting wrapped into the algorithm. So having a DTD (which will definitely help you write good cross-browser pages) is a "best practice" even though its not necessary. Possibly in the near future it may even help you with a little extra boost.
