I decided to poke around a bit and see if my web site was getting any play in the blogosphere. So I punched in the topic phrase that's particulat to my web site, into Google's Blog Search.

At first I was delighted at the ocean of blogs linking to my site. Then I was sad. It turns out that at least 90% of the links were from splogs; machine created blogs that crank out targeted keyword text through scraping, so that Google will index them and drive traffic to their affiliate links or ads.

The pattern was blitheringly easy to detect since all the blogger subdomains had a suffix containg an obvious auto-sequence number/ID.

What was good news was that almost all of them had been suspended by Blogger. I've seen these on LiveJournal too.

At least Google's starting to clean up Blogger!
