Improving PR when there are no "authority" sites

Hello all,
The top site for a particular search phrase has toolbar PR 4. If i get tool bar PR 5 becuse i get linked by a PR6 site, will I be #1 in the SERPS.
Actually it is an unexplored niche. So my site is much more targeted to the search phrase than the top site.
What is the linking stratergy for being #1 in an unexplored niche where there are no authority sites to get links from?

Remember to get good anchor text on this link from PR6 site, anchor text that includes your target keyphrase. And with other links you get, use this phrase but with slight modifications.

I succeeded to get to #1 in situation similiar to yours with 2 backlinks from PR4 pages, one of them educational.

Don't forget to optimise the rest of your site.

It's not just PR. Title, H1, keyword density, anchor text in links, folder names, filenames, picture names, alt text.

Not necessarily. On-page factors are also very important. PR4 pages often do better in the serps for particular kw's than PR6's.

That said, it sounds like your niche is wide-open, and if you create a lot of good pertinent content, you could become the "authority site". You won't have to worry about getting inbound links, because your on-page stuff (content) will push you towards the top, you'll then get noticed, and people will link to the site without you even asking.

You need some decent links first, though. See if you can get in the ODP and Y directories - they like niche sites.
