Google ranks us #1 with quotation marks, but nowhere without them

Hi, I think my web site is SEO'ed pretty well, but Iknow most people search for keywords without quotation marks. We come up #1 in Google's SERPs for the keywords in our HTML title tags, but nowhere without the keywords.

Does anybody know why and how we can come up without the quotation marks in the search (the way most people search)?

Thanks,
Bruce

If this is a new site, you are in the sandbox.

There seems to be a number of ways that should combine for coming up high in the serps.
Be a trustworthy site. Be the most relevant subject for the search term. Be the one with the most and highest rated inbound links from other sites.
Don't know how to find it because search doesn't seem to work anymore but you should read:
Bret's 26 steps for a successful website in google alone.
Might be able to google "Bret's 26 steps" and find it outlined somewhere.

Jane_Doe,

So could the fact that the earth rotates on its axis.

Brucec,

Defined SEO'd well, have you got inbounds with the correct link text using each of the key words as well as the full combination from other "related on topic" sites?

What ever those are, and folks that isn't as cut and dry as the S/Es might think.

lol, in quotation marks it brings up all site that have 'keyword1 keyword2' where without quotations brings up a variety of people who specialise in keyword 1 and 2 and both which might be why your not doing as well

Like the bear said, define SEO'd well?

So could the fact that the earth rotates on its axis.

There is a fine line between "SEO'd well" enough to rank well and SEO'd enough to get a spam penalty, which is a highly logical consideration for this type of search return problem.

I'm unclear as to why the Earth rotating on its axis would have any relevance to the OP issues.

Jane_Doe

If all of the links to his sites were from earth rotation sites and his site was about coffee cup rotation then the fact that the earth rotates whould count for him not ranking well (links for unrelated off topic sites). His site may still be SEO'd well but his backlink profile isn't up to snuff.

Which is why I asked what SEO'd well meant.

I would expect certain kinds of sites to be consistent, logical, spiderable and thus to be well SEO'd maybe what you count as SEO'd well are really spam sites and that you haven't yet come across a decent site that is also SEO'd well.

The algos are always a changin' - what was SEO'd well today and ranking #1 is often tomorrow's site with a spam penalty, hence all of the posts about why did my site drop from the top ten to nowhere in the update threads.

Jane_Doe,

Brucec didn't complain about loosing placement, his question was why only a highly specific search showed a page.
