A few months back I got interested in professional webmastering and have been building websites with SEO in mind, and of course opne thing I did was give my hobby site a complete makeover. This was some time ago, (more than 3 months) but Google still lists old pages that don't even exist anymore, and none of the new ones.
How can I get G to update it's index? I subscribed to the sitemap thing for awhile but even though it showed having downloaded my sitemap several times, there was still no update in the index.
The only way I know would be to "purchase enough stock to be able to influence board of directors meetings".

The best way to get new pages found is to give them links from the pages on your site that are most often visited by googlebot. They can be temporary links, just left in place long enough for G to find the new pages.
If you have friends with sites that do well in G, ask them to give you a temp link to the new pages until they're solid in the index, then they can remove them.

Sticky me in a few days about this since I am just doing exactly the same to about 10 sites...no guarantees.
