I operate a very large, very popular web directory where we only include listings by request from the webmaster.

After a typical Google update we receive a few emails requesting that we remove some sites from our listings. We assume this is because of some piece of misunderstood information floating around on some message board.

This most recent update has caused more emails than ever before. We have people who have paid for premiere listigs who are now demanding their listings be removed. We are glad to help out, but it's getting a little rediculous. I mean, one person has written to say that Google now penalizes all backlinks so they are working feverishly to get rid of them all.... hmmm, not the Google that I know and love.

We don't do strong SEO, and we haven't really been watching this latest update. Other than simply removing the listings, how should we respond to these requests?
