PR Puzzle

Why does Page Rank not increase?

I have a site that has a home page of PR5 and I don’t know why? I think my home page should have a lot higher PR but I have no idea what else I have to do to make this happen. Here is a brief info about the site. It is 5 years old, never being penalized, banned etc by SEs. Google shows 11,800 back links (and they are a lot more) that are not only internal but from thousands of external sites as well. No linkfarm sites, noting illegal deployed on the site (cloacking etc). Many of the external links are from well known news sites with numerous pages of PR8 and PR7 all pointing to my home page. There are many external links pointing to internal pages as well not only the home page. Google has indexed about 800,000 pages from the site and all of them (obviously) have a link to the home page. Yet this page has a PR5 and has had it for more than a year despite the fact I have added content and more external sites have links pointing to this very home page.
If anyone has an idea, I would appreciate. I am going crazy and don’t know what I have to do more to increase the PR or what am I dong wrong? I know many sites with 40 - 70 externel links and having PR6 or PR7?

Do you have both versions showing? www and non-www splitting pr?
Also you can have a pr8 page pointing at you but if it has a lot of other links on that pr8 page you are not going to get all the benefit from it. Gets split up among the number of links and so forth in some weird formula.

PR is a mess

I have one site with 2-3 low PR links and it has a PR3. The other site has with many PR5, 6, and hundreds of PR2-4 links, yet it only has a PR4. I know it's logartihmic but still.

i started a new website a month back, with quality news content and updating every hour. Within one month i got PR 4, and moreover i placed a link from my 4 years old website having PR 4, none others placed a link to my new website. I can't understand the theory, how google gave PR 4 to the one month old website.
But i am getting just around 100 visitors a day to this new website.

PR is history.

Once upon a time there was something called PR living on a toolbar in a distant city called GoogleLand.... :-)

We have several PR8 links and yet in the last couple of weeks we somehow dropped from PR7 to PR6. Very strange.

Change your name to Matt Cutts. Works a treat.

I don't think it's like the old days when a link from a PR6 site would give you a PR 4-5 in one update.
