Need advice - Have I been spamming?

OK - I have a webdesign site, its about 5 years old with PR6.
Struggling for web work a friend suggested designing a finance related site to generate an income.

This time last year i did so and at the bottom of my index page for the webdesign site i added a finance term. This linked to the main page of the finance site hosted on the webdesign site.
Before long i was getting high ranks for these finance related words but the URL was obviously my webdesign site. Anyone clicking on these links would then be taken to the real site (which obviously looked the same).

I spent over a year creating links campaigns for the finance site and even now i did site:mydomain.com and they are both showing all pages and have full URLs.

Since yesterday when i do a search for any terms and the name of my website, nothing at all.

I was wondering if someone could tell me if this is spamming and should i get rid of these terms on my webdesign index page.
The problem is that i have focused all my time on the finance side and not had much work from the webdesign side of things.

Should i wait? like everyone else - i am extremely depressed
