Google Remove URL does not work

I just tried to enter into the Google Remove URL feature a URL for an out of date post which Google is still cacheing even though the link & old blog is dead. Here's the error msg. I'm getting when I submit the link:

"We can't determine if that page is truly outdated because the server returned the following unusual status code: 412"

Can anyone tell me what this means, why I'm getting it & what I can do to fix the problem?

Also, which of these 2 options do I want to check: remove all related to the URL; or remove snippet portion? The first?

On another related subject, what I'd really like to do is to send anyone hitting that link to the correct up to date link in my new blog. I've failed miserably at redirecting via .htaccess. If Google had this feature it'd be a big help.
