hi,
I have been developing and optimizing a site for a pretty competitive commercial keyword. The site is almost 2.5 years and has been out of the sandbox for more than 8 months now. Eversince it was released from the sandbox it has been ranking within the top 15 results for the main targetting keyword phrase in google. (but i rank #1 for allinanchor for that phrase, still having sand box effects, just wondering)

All my incoming links have the keyword in the anchor text and 95% from link exchange, and rest from directories. My site has unique content and lots of pages content pages. The content is developed by my inhouse content writer and is never copied from elsewhere.

All generic seo practices like absolute url, tags , titles and h1,h2 have been in implementation from day 1. I regulary update the content of the site with new articles and with news happening in the related industry

Ever since the site came out of the sandbox this is what i have been noticing. i exchange links say with 5-6 quality sites today, the site goes up say 1 or 2 places within the next 2 days. if i regularly exchange links say for a couple of weeks , the site goes all the way up (#5 is the maximum it has reached). Now the situation gets very frustrating when i dont exchange links for a couple of weeks. i have not been exchanging links for more than 20 days now and the site is now at #15 , where it all began!

This flux propotional to the link exchange happens even though most of the other sites within the 15 places in the serps for my keyword are not sites like mine and they do not link exchange. A few are authority sites and a few are sites who have bought links from authority sites and are never updated. now when they dont even lay their hands on their sites and get no new incoming links or new content their positions in the serps are sealed,
why does mine struggle to stay up?

So what do you guys think that i must do to get out of this loop of link exchange more and stay up?

i am very sure about my theory because it has been happening ever since i came out of the sandbox and i have experimented with in and i am pretty convinced. any of you guys have a similar situation? what do you think must be done. Any pointers and help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks a lot

Depends largely on the KWs/sector/site, but it sounds like you need to get off the reciprocal treadmill, and get some "real" links.

If the content is that good, it should get you some one-ways, and when asking, ID a particular inner page where it would be logical to have a link to some specific content rather than to your Home page.

It'll show you've done at least some home-work, and they may even consider it ;-)

Are you in the ODP? In my experience, that will "seal" your rankings, as you say. I don't think a site needs much maintenance once you're in the ODP, as you keep gaining new links as directories using ODP update themselves. If you do maintain it then even better.

If I were Google algo designer, I'd penalize for that. It's unnatural to have keyword in all backlinks anchor text!

Get better backlinks, more of them one-directional.

One site of mine was rotating in between #2 and #6 for its main keyphrase since it came out of sandbox. For last few months, though, it fixed at #2, since I added a few one-side backlinks with this keyphrase from relatively good PR sites. I keep adding this kind of links and wait for it to climb to #1. Perhaps DMOZ would also help, but this site didn't get listed yet.

Not necessarily. I have a site with two ODP listings which appears to be a victim of "collateral damage" with the shuffle of Sept 22. A well-maintained site too.

coosblues, sorry to hear that. Scratch my message then! Personally I haven't had any cases of that but I'll take your word for it.

If the keyword is that competitive it might well be that the other top sites are constantly getting new links too. At the least they may pump up their incoming links a bit when they see you move up, especially if they move down at the same time.

Which basically means you can't stop looking for links.
