How does Google Alert service access password-protected sites?

I subscribe to the Google Alert service and receive daily emails with news items recently index by Google. At least a third of the time, when I click the link in the "Alerts" message to go to the page with the news, I am unable to read it because the newspaper's site and articles are password-protected. For example if I receive an Alert that the NY Times has posted a story about widgets and I click the link to the page with the story, I am unable to read it if I am not a NYT's subscriber. Yet, Googlebot seems to be able to spider and index the same article page without a login and password. What's going on?
