Duplicate content - if you can't change it, what can you do?

My site appears to have been penalised for duplicate content - there is no duplicate content on the site, but G thinks there is because many products are very similar, but in the Real World, they are actually very different, e.g. two items the same design except that one is made of steel and one of gold. Our site is in the G index, but the index is full of pages with no meta descriptions - when I check the pages, it looks like it is because G has found another product it thinks is the same.
My question is generally, what on earth can I do about this? We are losing more and more traffic and Christmas is our peak period.
Also, can anyone tell me how to tell how many pages I have in the actual index, and how many in the supplemental index?
Thanks for your help.

We recently had to address a similar issue. We moved all the information that stays the same so it's either in a single pop-up window or iframe that every related product page can call -- or in one case, we used a graphic image instead of text.
