News Items Swamp Serps

On looking at the serps in the UK this morning in the financial sector I notice that the serps have changed quite dramatically with news items taking the place of many previously higher ranking urls.

Has anyone else noticed this in any other sectors, is this a new algo being introduced, if so the dominance of news items in listings seems very top heavy.

I must say it seems to be for the secondary terms not the major generic terms.

I've noticed a long term trend in this direction for all categories. I'm not sure that it is a change so much as it is more news from major sources being put online combined with better SEO for those sites.

my guess is that Google regards this as a feature, it makes the SERPs more fresh if one out of the top 10 results is populated by a highly relevant article from an authority news source.
