my site dropped since march
not traffic from google, but 250 000 pages indexed (after last update)
site is news site, and as many of here told me, the main reason of site drop can be duplicate content.
yes, i know ,that lot of artciles on our site aren't uniqal (as huge amount of articles on news sites.)
i don't going to discuss what is dup content and what do news site.
just a simple anotation: there are only 1 000-5 000 serious news agencies (may be 10-15k ..no more), but u know that amount of newspapers print and online is 1000X ...
hope, u understand what i mean. it this case google must drop 1-5% of sites in internet , becasue they duplicate news in different ways (copy pasting, just one paragraph, rss ,,, etc).
now about my problem...
i'm shammy, but i think the reason of all this am I.
at the start of this year, i decide to change query strign urls on my site to SEF urls.
but as i had a 4-5K uniqal visitors/day .. i start testing it on 2 another my domains.
just put my db and templates and test it.
when everything was fine, i set all this on my main site and remember to move it. of course i don't update this sites, but templates with part of my db there was.
believe me it's not a site cloning, :-) because i even don't change design ..logo, etc.
when my problems start at march .. i start investigation and find that google index this sites too :-(
so , results from this sites are in google SERPS. (and even work well .. without having any PR).
at that time, i set 301 redirect to my main site, but they are still (after 5-6 months) in google db (with sumplemental result mark).
last month i check that pages from this sites still are in google and decide to move htaccess and set 404 error. (so don't redirect it to my main site)
of course traffic on my main site dropped, but my main question is ... what the best solution in my case?
1. set htaccess file on this sites and wait-wait-wait?
2. or move all from this sites and such gbot to check 404 error?
3, try google removal tool and move this domains from google
btw, searching in google www.secondsite.com and www.3-rdsite.com, get result ... www.mymainsite.com
on of this sites now have PR 5, as my main site

I sympathize with your problem. As a computer scientist, you did the correct thing - you tested your template and database to make sure it functions correctly BEFORE you installed it to your clients website.
Unfortunately, Google also spidered the Test and now you have a duplicate content penalty. In the future, when you test - only test in folders that are Password Protected. That is the only way to be sure that spiders cannot find those pages.
Are the Test domains now empty? All pages 404 error?
You might need to wait a very long time before Google spiders and receives 404 for all of those pages.
I wish there were a better answer. I also have many pages that 404 error, but Google has never removed them from the index. I can only wait.

yesterday, i put 301 redirect (once again) [last time i don't know what to do .. just testing-testing ;-) and wait ...]

btw .. gbot visit site very intensive. (less than yahoo .. but 4-5gb/month, visits every day)
also in G db are my old urls (with id?), {with suplemental mark} .. so it can be another reason dup content factor.

only the old site, and before you use that tool, tripple check because the removal lasts for 6 months.
sorry, if my question is a little stupid.
how to move this old sites?
just now there(old site) isn't any file in main dir, only htaccess file, which redirect to main site.
1. does, i need to put noindex, nofollow tags on main page of main site?
2. or may be remove htaccess file from old site, put metatags on main site and only after this remove?
