Google Penalizes for being #1! Yes, it's true! Once you are in the #1 Position google WILL NOT let you get any higher, but WILL allow you fall - often drastically!

I have seen this time and time again.

*Before* the new customer even finishes typing in www.google.com your page pops up... (Position -1.)

All people should have two screens above each other. The upper one with your site. Google serps in the lower one. All regulated by the 'Google put your site on top tool (Beta)'.

Soon you will be able to pay for a hypnotic beam to shoot out of Google and imprint your website name into the frontal cortex of all users searching for your keywords... ;-)

I have been thinking this for years but never managed to articulate it quite so clearly.

It all makes sense now.

No doubt GOOG has been on a hiring binge.

All those astrophysicists.

I believe going from no. 1 to the interplanetary NET is the way to go sire!

"like the man in the song says .. I can see clearly now.."

MARS SEO here I come!

What's this #1? I can't even get to #1 for my own domain name!

I have a site that has been #1 since I uploaded it a year and a half ago, and it has not been penalized. It's still sitting pretty above 48,000,000 others.

What do I attribute it to? The timing of upload,(early Spring) and the niche, because people were searching for exactly what I gave them. The site never went into the sandbox at all.

I really believe the timing of your uploaded new site has an effect on ranking. For instance, if you are selling boats, the time to upload your site is not in the dead of winter.

Just my theory.

Sweet Cognac--I add the site to Google every day!, my site existed since 1995--it's very specific and was the first site of its kind!--that's why I was always ranking first--because I was first on the net and many linked to me. what do you mean by "Upload"?--sorry for my PC ignorance...I'm not a "Webmaster", just a single mom of 4 learning as I go, but built my own site etc...any input will help...the site comes back usually, but recently, the stretches of time for me being completely gone from Google, are longer, and the disappearing act happens more often than ever before! now it's my selling season, and adds on adwords go up to $80 per day just be semi-visible...I'm a very small business which supports me and my kids alone...I cannot affgord such rents!

Hi sabine7777,

I understand your frustration with trying to get a good ranking especially if you are only a small website, it is not as easy as it used to be to rank well in any search engine. The web has changed. SPAM and affiliates scams coupled with the explosion of fast internet connections and more websites add to the difficulties of ranking well as there is a lot more competition out there.

It could be something very simple that your website is missing or is doing that is causing you problems or it could be any number of other factors.

My guess is your website is bouncing in Googles everflux/rotating evalauation and is possibly more strongly optimised in some areas but not others.

Other things to look at,

Look past Google and look at MSN, Yahoo, Altavista and the other smaller engines, do you have listing in these? - Although google is top, other engines will still send traffic your way if you are listed.

Do you add anything unique to your community of product or services ie. original reviews, how-to's, FAQ's, pictures, tips and tricks, samplers?

Do you link to related websites, do related or complimentry website link to you? Is the link text descriptive to your search terms? Do you link to any SPAMMY sites?

Have you an entry in DMOZ?

There are many more tips if you have a look around all the threads... Hang in there and keep on learning!

Yes, biGGie is right. It is tougher nowadays to stay on top. He has given some good tips. The web used to be full of mom and pop sites and personal sites, and now it's hard to find any.

Last week I was on the web trying to find out why my freezer wouldn't freeze anymore, and after an hour of searching found 1 site finally, that had some suggestions. I was getting very frustrated. I don't like browsing the serps anymore. I can't find the information sites that used to be there. The serps use to be an information source, now they're a spammed out product source.

I have personal sites in the serps, and I don't sell anything. So maybe your little area on the web got saturated with spammers and they pushed you out. What is happening on the serps now must be horrifying for small businesses trying to make it.

Have you added new pages recently? If not, then add some more pages, one every day if possible on related topics to your products or reviews of your products. Then with G's next deep crawl, you'll be doing better. Adding more pages will also bring your PR up.

If your site has been on the web that long, you must have many organic links already, but you MUST do something to refresh your pages. Submitting your site to G everyday is not going to help. Everyone is waiting on the next deep crawl.

At this point in time however, you should be focusing on the future. Something that will bring in more income NEXT year, because that's how long it's taking.

Anyway, hope this helps. I know it's hard, I have 4 kids myself. I even try to build pages on problems I have with my kids and how they were resolved. These pages are doing pretty good because many parents are having problems with their kids.

So that's what I would do, build more pages, since you have experiences that no one else has, and you have knowledge that no one else has.

Maybe your kids have already expressed their desires for Christmas. Make a page on "This is what my kids want for Christmas, and this is what they are getting." :)

Do you have special recipes or crafts? Make some pages on them just in time for the upcoming holidays. Even if you just put adsense on them, every little bit helps, and the pennies do add up.

If you've had your website since 1995, is it on a freeserver like Geocities or Angelfire etc.? You say you don't know what "upload" means, which is the same thing I guess as FTP'ing. Maybe I am the one that is the computer term illiterate.
