How fast does G check for redirects?

Since I am no expert in SE yet, I made a pretty stupid fault. Google listed a new site of us on Friday. Traffic started to come in. 1 Day later on Saturday we made a 404 meta-refresh redirect from the 404 page to the homepage because Yahoo still had a lot of old non-existing urls indexed. On Sunday evening the traffic from Google stopped and I can't find the site in the index anymore by a site:domain search. Now my question: Is it possible that the site was scanned and blocked by Google that fast or would this only happen on the monthly spidering of the whole site? I saw no Google Bot in those days. I consider 1-2 days as pretty fast for such a check, but maybe it's really like that?
