Google ban question(s)

I'm scared like hell to get banned from Google.

What I wonder is this: IF I would get banned, is it permanent, and how would I get back? AFAIK, none of my sites are banned, but just the thought of this happening freaks me out.

Also... what do they base bans on, and what do they involve? Are there variations and/or lighter forms of bannings?

I am also wondering the same thing about MSN Search, which, to my knowledge, is the only other SE worth mentioning. At least if you live in Sweden, like me.
