It is for formatting reasons - making sure the results page does not get a horizontal scrollbar when viewed on smaller screens. The link will be normal.

It is also to stop a very long URL in the first few listings having to be placed UNDER the adwords content to fit, and hence having a very large gap between it and the previous result in the SERPs above it.

horizontal scrollbar?
why it should affect it?

A very long URL with no spaces will have no wrap anywhere in it and the window will expand to fit the width of the content even if that means that the window becomes wider than the screen - then there will be a hozizontal scrollbar and the adwords content will also be off the edge of the screen too.
Also see my previous answer, as that is the more common reason.
