Should I Aim For Less Popular Keywords?

I have a site that I'd like to get listed as #1 in Google, but the keyword is a very popular one.

Is it better to try to optimize my site to rank #1 with less popular keywords instead?

For example, say that "Widgets" is a super popular keyword. Should I try to optimize for "widget films" or "widget uploads"...

I wonder if it'll be impossible to outrank the big corporation sites when I'm probably sandboxed already as a newcomer.

Go after the small keywords first and then go after the bigger ones. But don't just focus on a few keywords and focus on several different ones. It will take time for you to be in position to target the big keywords.
