Are new sites penalized by Googlebot? If so, is there any workaround?

Try starting with these threads about what many refer to as the Google "sandbox" [google.com] and how it seems to affect many new sites.

In New orleans, the Google engineer told me directly that there is no sandbox. I am confused.

Google people may call it not "sandbox" but using other words, like "penalty, filter" and so on.
Definitely it exists and there is quite a serious problem for new sites to get out of this "sandbox".
