New Content / Cache Issue

This is almost a reverse "google likes new content" problem. Here's the issue....

I added a new page to a site about 3 weeks ago. The site has good PR and the page initially ranked well on the first cache (#15). The page was then cached two more times by google and then climbed to #10 due to some links getting pointed to the page.

Then, I completely redesigned the page and the cache reverts to the very first cache n the next crawl (2 weeks old) and the term immediately drops to result #50. It stays there until the cache is finally updated and immediately goes back to #10. (took about 3 days)

Today, (5 days after regaining result #10) I again did a major page redesign as I continue to optimize the page for conversions. Within hours the cache reverts back to the first cache date and the page again drops to result #50.

My question is... I always thought that google liked new content and changes to a page. But whenever I change my page (admittedly major changes) the most recent cache disappears and the page drops deeply in the serps immediately. A few days later it will get a new cache and return to the first page.

Anyone have this happen to them? What's the story here? Thanks

What do you mean my "cache", do you just mean the G SERP's or the "cached" links in G search results?

Did you ever think that what you're changing is apparently affecting the search phrase(s)? You're probably rewording some of the targeted text. If not, and ALL of the meta tags and body text are remaining the same, then I don't know. I have heard that G doesn't like CSS that much for new content. I've heard that some changing over to CSS suffered SERP's losses. Could be something along those lines...not necessarily CSS but something else.
