Site down for 10 hours - will this be a problem?

Worth moving host to avoid?

My UK web host has informed me that they are physically relocating their servers to a new data centre, and expect downtime of up to 10 hours.

Understandably I am concerned. Is a gap of 10 hours long enough to be removed from Google if it tries to crawl my site? How long would it take to reappear in Google? Is it worth moving to another (unknown) host before the outage to avoid the downtime, or would this potentially cause more problems than it would solve?

Thanks for any advice.

10 hours is not a big deal as far as Google is concerned. If you have a lot of repeat visitors, you may want to give them a head's up though. We've been down for substantial periods of time in the past (24 hours, 48 hours...) and it hasn't affected us with respect to Google.

Do you have a lot of good inbound links? My site was down for a while a about 3 years ago and it stayed in the same place in Google but with URL only. I think it was because of all the links to it. But then Google may do things differently now.

Thanks for your help. I have over 300 inbound links on Google. I guess I should just sit tight and try not to worry - not easy for me!

More than once a site has lost service for 10 or more hours and continued to enjoy its earlier rankings upon service restoration. As one friend of mine would put it ... ain't nuthin' but a thang.

You might dip in the results for a day or two, or Google might not even notice it.
