Adding unrelated content to focussed website

Will Google penalize?

I have a website that's focussed on a single subject. It's a web directory. I've been thinking of adding a new section which I believe will interest my visitors based on their demographic profile. However the two subjects don't really have anything in common.

As an example let me say if a website entirely about golf introduces a section on career guidance. This is like chalk and cheese. Yet it would help the pages get indexed quicker as compared to having a separate site for it. Promoting a new content site from scratch takes much more time.

Can Google see red over this? Could my website be sent to the sandbox for this? How much of a risk is this? What does your experience say? Thanks.
