I remember reading a Conventional Wisdom in the last Newsweek castigating Google for becoming a portal, everything it originally sought not to be. That argument deserves its own post, but before I get off it I'll admit I am a fan of the new personalizable Google homepage. Except the weather:

The weather for my area has been disgustingly inaccurate in the two weeks I've patronized Google's new homepage. Google has forecast thunder and lightning 10 times and we've only had it twice, and not on the days forecast. Actually, the last time it actually thundered here Google had the current weather marked "mostly sunny", while outside we experienced torrential rain and gale-force winds. Perhaps weather on the East coast is slightly unpredictable, but I'd like to know where Google gets its meteorological data (another problem I have with the service; the source isn't cited), because it is a lot less accurate than other weather forecasts, moreover, it seems altogether free from the limitations of actuality.

Personally I think that weather forecasts on the Internet are selected from a database using a random number generator. A couple of weeks ago I checked the forecast for my location in the UK from about five different sources and they were all different and in some cases completely different.

They are really for amusement only so if you need a weather forecast I suggest that you watch TV :)

Well I check Google's weather and rewrite my adsense copy based on the prediction. Thought I might sell more Brollies etc.

It predicts the weather by nature.
Red sky at night, sailors delight

Red sky at morning, sailors take warning

OR

Evening red and morning gray,

sends the traveler on his way.

Evening gray, morning red,

brings the rain down on his head.

All weather conditions and forecasts are provided by Weather Underground, Inc.

[google.com...]

The founder of Wunderground has an interesting history with the early google. ;)

They have to be different, otherwise they get slapped with a duplicate content penalty ;-)
