I did not see a discussion on this yet, but google is offering $4500 for an accepted and completed contribution to the open source community. Try as I might, I can't find anything evil about this:

Google has launched a competition for the summer through its Google Code site. The competition is called "Summer of Code" and invites programmers from around the world to get involved with Open Source projects.

In total, Google are offering 200 positions to budding programmers who will all earn US$4500 for their efforts. All you have to do is pick an open source project of your choice, come up with a small project to help their efforts, and submit your proposal. The 200 chosen will then be mentored during the summer as they attempt to complete their entries.

not evil but smart way to recruit and advertise. $4500 is literally nothing to Google. They will get their name mentioned on hundreds of sites and find a few very smart future employees.
