when did horizontal sponsored links start appearing?

I just noticed that for certain money keywords on google you now get a horizontal ad bar across the serps, similar to yahoo. Has this been going on for awhile?

I think you are refering to the premium adwords listing above the organics in the horizontal bar. If this is correct, they have been there since at least early 2002. Now they are based on ranking formulas whereas before they were based on contractual agreements for large monthly bids rather than cpc/formulas. Anyone remember making those fun bids and dominating premium spots all month! :)
