Banned and not banned!

.co.uk banned but .com appears

Here's the scenario:

1) Two .co.uk sites, both on the same UK server with plenty of UK links in acquired over 3 years.

2) Both sites now vanished via site:domain.co.uk

But...

They have instantly reappeared under the .com url (A few people have linked to the .com versions in the past by mistake).

Why?

Has google mistakenly decided to dump the .co.uk for the .com version? Or have they missed the .com version when banning the .co.uk version? When I look up the ip on whois they show only the .com of each site on the server, and the .co.uk is not mentioned. Is this a clue to the server being set up incorrectly?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
