I find this really quite frightening because with google local search why will people need to use a search phrase like 'bike shops in london' and find a well optimised directory site.

<Google sees the service as a way to offer its advertisers - who pay for their listings to be placed in a prominent position in a section of the website - a way to localise advertising.>

Very interesting readings. Its all about advertisers :-)

Because people want bargains and want national suppliers or cheap online suppliers. They have always been able to use the yellow pages but instead use the internet, nothing will change. If someone wants a local store, they are probably not going to buy online anyway. The fact is that most online business's deliver nationwide, so why would a user want to restrict him/herself to a local search? Many searches do not work on this local.google, for instance, a jobs site may have great jobs relevant for every town in the UK but be based in Leeds. These sites won't show for a London search.

Overall the principle is flawed.
