When do optimization changes take effect?

Do your changes take effect the next time the page is crawled by Google?

Can somebody answer this simple question regarding optimization...

If you optimize a page, do your changes take effect the next time the page is crawled by Google, or does it happen during the next google dance/datacenter update/other event etc?
