Is Google Indexing Non-Linked Links?

Site URL with no href showed up in backlinks

Perhaps this has been mentioned before, but I just noticed a page with a mention of one of our sites' pages in the Google backlinks for that site.

However, the URL is only mentioned - not linked, yet Google still showed it as a backlink. Is this a widespread phenomenon now?
